So with the World Cup on the go, and being that MD has a very diverse (and deviant :fury: ) crowd, I thought this was a good place for the old debate....

    FOOTBALL or SOCCER

    aaaaand, GO! :haha:

Are we discussing which is the right term to define the game of football or are we comparing two different sports here? :shifty:

Football...we invented it and named it, fluffing americans invent another sport which is just nancy boy rugby and confused their hands with their feet and a ball with an egg then decided that they have right to rename our sport. Its football and while your at it give back our language come up with your own then ruin that.:haha:

So North American Rugby.... except we already have that... :shifty:

    I like Australian soccer
  7. ~ Fish ~ @ 16 Jun 2018 11:53:21 PM
Do you guys have pointy-ball football in Aussieland?
  8. Lolly Squirrel @ 17 Jun 2018 01:49:40 AM
    Sky makes everyone's balls pointy
  9. [~?~] ѕ𝓀𝐲β𝕝 @ 17 Jun 2018 05:27:30 AM
We have Australian nrl and afl
  10. [BDU] @ 17 Jun 2018 10:05:22 AM
The complete term is association football. Americans managed to get the name 'soccer' from the word 'association' instead of just calling it 'football'. I'll stick to calling it football.

Then what would you call the CFL (canadian football league) where there's a pointy ball thrown around then BO?
Canadian Rugby? Cuz it sure isn't rugby... and it's not soccer...
  12. [BDU] @ 17 Jun 2018 10:37:57 AM
    What do you call it?
I'd call Canadian football 'Canadian football' and American football 'American football' to avoid confusion
  13. ~ Fish ~ @ 17 Jun 2018 10:46:10 AM
then you (a UKer) have accepted that we have a sport called football and it is different than soccer. :shifty:
  14. [BDU] @ 17 Jun 2018 12:27:39 PM
Canadian football? Yea, you guys have Canadian football
Rugby is football too. It's called rugby football, hence the RFL (rugby FOOTBALL league), but we call it either either rugby union or rugby league depending on the rules

    so to clarify.....

there's 3 types of football, with multiple rule-sets.....

Football Football - What North Americans call .... Football :shifty:
Rugby Football - better than either of the other sports
    Soccer Football - Duh.

So if the above is true, wouldn't it be more logical to use only the descriptor, as we know they are all "football" ? :nut:

Leaving us with pointy Football, less pointy Rugby, and round Soccer....
